Why we picked it
A wooden vending machine children run themselves. They stock the shelves, a customer pays with a play coin or the play card, presses a letter and a number, and the snack drops into the drawer. It is a shop, a counting game and a letter-and-number matching exercise, and preschoolers will run it for anyone who sits down.
Why it made our list: it turns things kids this age love (buttons, money, being in charge) into practice with letters, numbers and taking turns, with no screen and no battery. It was the 2025 Toy of the Year winner in the preschool category.
Before you buy: Melissa & Doug grades it 3 to 6. The set has nine double-sided snacks and drinks, three play coins, a bank card and a sign. The coins and snack pieces are small; keep them from children under three. The machine is 17 inches tall and 12½ wide, so check the shelf you have in mind. No assembly.
