Why we picked it
A first puzzle: five wooden shapes, each with a big knob a one-year-old can grip, each sitting over a matching picture so the shape means something. The knob is the point. Flat puzzle pieces need a pincer grip toddlers do not have yet; a knob lets them lift, turn and drop a piece into place on their own.
Why it made our list: it is the puzzle that teaches what a puzzle is (an oval, a circle, a rectangle, a square and a triangle over a cottage scene), and the pictures give you words to say while they play.
Before you buy: Melissa & Doug's age grade is 1+. The board is about 12 inches square. Keep wooden puzzles flat in a drawer; a missing piece turns the whole thing into a board.
Before you buy
- Check the age grade on the box; it can differ from ours.
- If younger children share the room, check for small parts.
- Look up the model number at cpsc.gov/Recalls before first use.
