Why we picked it
Thirty-two translucent squares and triangles with magnets along the edges. They snap together into flat patterns, then cubes, then houses, garages and towers. A three-year-old builds flat; a five-year-old builds up; by seven they are designing. The tiles are large and easy to hold, and they tidy into a stack.
Why it made our list: magnetic tiles are the open-ended building toy that gets used every week for years, and Magna-Tiles is the original, compatible with the larger sets you might add later.
Before you buy: the age grade is 3 and up. The set has 14 small squares, 2 large squares and 16 triangles in six colours. The magnets are sealed inside the tiles; if a tile ever cracks, throw it away, because loose magnets are dangerous if swallowed. Thirty-two pieces is a starter; big builds want a second set.
Before you buy
- Check the age grade on the box; it can differ from ours.
- If younger children share the room, check for small parts.
- Look up the model number at cpsc.gov/Recalls before first use.
