Why we picked it
The red-and-yellow car that starts as a push toy and ends as a car they drive themselves. With the floorboard in, you push a small child around by the handle on the back; take the floorboard out once their feet reach the ground and it becomes foot-powered, for years. It works indoors, on the patio and on the sidewalk.
Why it made our list: it covers the whole stretch from "wants to be pushed around" to "wants to drive", it is sturdy enough to be handed down, and it needs no batteries.
Before you buy: Little Tikes grades it 18 months to 5 years, with a weight limit of 50 lb. Adult assembly is required, and it takes real floor space. The front wheels spin 360 degrees. Several themed versions exist; this listing is the classic red car.
