Why we picked it
Sixty-five big bricks in a box that doubles as storage. Alongside the plain bricks there are two DUPLO figures, a small car with rolling wheels, number bricks, flowers and chairs, plus a booklet of easy build ideas. That is the whole product, and that is why it lasts: an eighteen-month-old stacks and knocks down, a three-year-old builds a garage for the car, a four-year-old builds a street and tells you who lives there.
Why it made our list: DUPLO bricks are the size toddlers can grip and press together themselves, they work with every other DUPLO set, and a plain brick box gets used most because nothing in it is meant to be one specific thing.
Before you buy: LEGO's age grade is 1½ to 5. DUPLO is sized for children under three, but if you also own standard LEGO, keep the two apart until everyone in the house is past the mouthing stage. No batteries, no instructions needed.
