Why we picked it
Three pounds of sand that sticks to itself and not to hands. It packs into moulds, slices cleanly, crumbles slowly and does not dry out, so it is an indoor sandbox that lives in a lidded box. Children this age will spend a long time just squeezing, cutting and rebuilding it.
Why it made our list: sensory play is most of what three-year-olds want, and this is the version that does not need a garden, a hose or a vacuum afterwards.
Before you buy: the maker's age grade is 3 and up, and the bag says not for children under three. Use it in a tray or a bin with sides; it stays together but it does travel. Moulds and tools are sold separately or in bigger kits; the plain bag is enough to start. Keep it off carpet. The bag is resealable; use it.
