Why we picked it
An electronics kit where the parts snap onto a grid like big press-studs. No soldering, no screwdriver: a seven-year-old builds a working circuit from the picture. This set's 25-plus projects are spy themed: a motion detector, a trip wire, a voice changer, a vibration sensor, alarms with light or sound.
Why it made our list: it is the first electronics kit most children can do on their own after one evening with a parent, the theme gives them a reason to build the next project, and it was a 2026 Toy of the Year finalist in the educational category.
Before you buy: Elenco's age grade is 7 and up. It takes three AAA batteries, not included. Pieces are small and the grid is what makes it usable; a lost part can block a project, so store it in the box. Other Snap Circuits sets use the same snap parts, which is the usual next step.
Before you buy
- Check the age grade on the box; it can differ from ours.
- If younger children share the room, check for small parts.
- Look up the model number at cpsc.gov/Recalls before first use.
