Why we picked it
A pen that draws in plastic. The strand comes out warm and soft, sets in seconds, and a child can lift the line off the page and build a cube, a bracelet or a wobbly dinosaur in the air. The Start line is made for children: 3Doodler says it runs at a low temperature with no hot external parts.
Why it made our list: it is a craft that produces a thing, it keeps a six- to eight-year-old absorbed for an hour, and it was a 2026 Toy of the Year finalist in the educational category.
Before you buy: the age grade is 6 and up (the box says 6 to 13). It charges by USB, cable included, in about half an hour, for roughly 45 minutes of drawing. The 72 plastic strands are the consumable; check refill availability when you buy the pen. There is an optional app with stencils; the pen works fully without it.
